We are committed to making sure you are placed in the courses that are commensurate to your level of preparation and career goals.

For the Fall 2026, 51³Ô¹ÏÍø will implement a hybrid placement assessment policy that integrates standardized test scores with in-person evaluations. Please see the following instructions below choose the situation that best applies to you.

First- years: You will receive a separate email with your assigned Saturday, on campus assessment date and time.

Transfers: : read the form carefully for your on-campus test date.

SAT Math < 660 (ACT Math < 28) OR No SAT/ACT  (Living Out-of-State/Abroad)Testing with an approved proctor* for English and Math.Complete the proctor agreement form: available March 6. Once submitted, the approved proctor will contact you with your test date. If you are unable to obtain a proctor, please contact: placementtesting@njit.edu or call (973)596-8389 to make other arrangements.

* An approved proctor is a qualified person, such as a high school guidance counselor, a librarian, or a testing center staff member, who is authorized to supervise the test in accordance with 51³Ô¹ÏÍø’s placement testing requirements.

All incoming students must take the English and Math placement assessments unless you are exempt. In order to obtain access to the placement assessment, you must have claimed your UCID at least 48 hours prior to the date of your assessment if you have not already done so. Note: Please access the registration form using your 51³Ô¹ÏÍø email address.  

  • English Placement Assessment
    • English Placement Essay takes approximately 50 minutes
    • English Placement Survey takes approximately 20 minutes  
      • Completion of both sections, Essay  & Survey, is essential for appropriate course placement.
  • Math Placement Assessment
    • Math Placement Assessment  is approximately 2 hours and is divided into three sections:
      • Basic Algebra (25 problems, 30 minutes), Advance Algebra (25 problems, 30 minutes) and Trigonometry (30 problems, 45 minutes) 
        • No calculator usage allowed 
        • Completion of all three (3) sections is essential for appropriate course placement

It is critical that all students taking the placement assessment complete it in one sitting.  Please allocate sufficient time to complete all required sections of the placement assessment the same day.
