51³Ô¹ÏÍø requires students are who are planning to study abroad to have health insurance while abroad.

Before You Go

You are eligible to use your 51³Ô¹ÏÍø’s student insurance while abroad, or you can use your own insurance if you waived 51³Ô¹ÏÍø’s student coverage.

It is your responsibility to:

  1. Confirm that your health insurance will cover you throughout the duration of your stay and how coverage will work abroad.
  2. Bring an entire semester or year worth of the prescription with you or check if the medication you are taking is readily available in the country. Make sure to know the generic name for the drug. Check for your destination country’s specific restrictions on how much of a particular drug can be brought into that country at a time.
  3. Check with your insurance provider how your plan will work abroad (for example, if you need to pay for services upfront and submit a request for a refund later).
  4. Get all the required and recommended immunizations for the host country.

All 51³Ô¹ÏÍø students going abroad through an approved study abroad program are automatically enrolled in a special emergency coverage through On Call International provides worldwide assistance in the event of an emergency that requires special evacuation and repatriation services or immediate medical intervention. Membership in the program will be provided at no charge to you.  Such services include: 

  • Pre-trip planning, advice, and referral
  • Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation
  • 24-Hour access to On Call Nurse Helpline
  • Prescription assistance
  • Deposit, advance and payment guarantees
  • Dispatch of medicine
  • Medical, dental and pharmacy referrals
  • Coordination of benefits

It is important to understand that although On Call International offers you travel, medical, and security advice and services, this is a travel assistance program only. On Call International IS NOT HEALTH INSURANCE. You must maintain your own health insurance plan with adequate coverage for medical expenses that may arise while you are overseas. We advise you to report all medical emergencies and medical expenses incurred internationally to your health insurance plan promptly with follow-up claim submissions as appropriate. Contact your insurance carrier for any additional questions before you travel.

Medical Forms and Self-Disclosure

Probably the most important step in ensuring your health abroad is by taking stock of your health and well-being now and making sure that you will receive the necessary information and support when you are overseas. If you self-disclose to the staff at the Office of Global Initiatives whatever conditions you have and be proactive in seeking advice, we can more easily support you before you travel, as well as when you are abroad, as is our goal. If you do not feel comfortable speaking with OGI, we recommend that you speak with University Health Services or C-CAPS, depending on your condition.

Students who acknowledge their conditions and who self-disclose can receive the appropriate care and attention that allows them to successfully study abroad. Do not leave yourself vulnerable to a potential health crisis or breakdown while abroad which may result in you returning home and losing a semester of academic credits and financial aid.

If you have any ongoing conditions (physical, mental, accommodations, etc) that you will continue to address or require support while abroad, please do not hesitate to reach out to your study abroad program and/or your advisor in the Office of Global Initiatives. The earlier you let us know, the better prepared we will be to support you.
